Heather Marie Duncan and Dr. John Floyd Whitmire, Jr., both of Candler, NC, were married on Saturday June 14, 2008 at the Crest Center in Asheville, NC. The Reverend Dr. C. Fred Werhan officiated.
The bride is the daughter of Robert and Gayle Duncan of Port Charlotte, Florida and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Duncan of Geneva Ohio, Ms. Myrtle Dekany of Port Charlotte, Florida and the late Mr. Julius Dekany.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Whitmire of Zirconia, NC and the grandson of Norma Sams of Hendersonville, Mr. James Sams of Mills River, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Whitmire, Sr. of Hendersonville.
The bride was presented in marriage by her parents.
The bride chose her best friend, Ashley Sherman of Orlando, Florida as her Maid of Honor. Bridesmaids were Laura Duncan of Washington DC, sister of the bride, Heather Polito of Port Charlotte, Florida, Maureen MacDonald of Raleigh, NC, and Tammy Wells-Angerer of Durham, NC.
Child attendants were Vanessa MacDonald of Raleigh, NC, flower girl, and George Wells-Angerer of Durham, NC, ring bearer.
Dr. Douglass M. Wallace of Asheville, NC, friend of the groom, served as best man. Groomsmen were Dr. Joseph Berendzen of New Orleans, LA, Jeff Dunaway of San Jose, California, and Patrick McDonough of Carrboro, NC.
Following the service there was a dinner and dance at the Crest Center for the guests and wedding party. A rehearsal dinner was held at the Cedars in Hendersonville on Friday, June 13.
The bride is a graduate of Port Charlotte High School, Florida State University and received a Graduate Certificate in Finance from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. She is a Sr. Assistant Manager for American General Financial Services in Asheville, NC.
The bridegroom graduated from East Henderson High School, Wake Forest University, Villanova University, and did post graduate work at Auckland University, Auckland, New Zealand. He is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy & Religion Department at Western Carolina University.
The bride and groom met in New Zealand where they were both 2003 Rotary International Ambassador Scholars.
Following a honeymoon cruise to the Grand Caymans, Cozumel, Belize and Honduras, Dr. and Mrs. Whitmire are at home at 120 Morgan Branch Estates in Candler, NC.
