Upstate storms knock out power for thousands

Nearly 5,000 Duke Energy customers in the Carolinas were still without power just before 10:30 a.m. today, after a round of thunderstorms Monday evening downed tree limbs and left nearly 20,000 customers without electricity.

In Spartanburg County, just more than 1,500 Duke customers didn't have power this morning, with most of those outages spread throughout the northern half of the county. In Greenville County, almost 1,950 customers were without power.

Crews continue to clean up knocked down trees today.

Some of the worst damage was in the foothills. At North Greenville University, officials said strong winds damaged the roofs of two buildings while 900 teenage campers huddled in the school's chapel. No one was injured.

A different storm also knocked down hundreds of trees in Columbia.

Forecasters say there could be another round of isolated strong storms today.
