Distracted Globe season continues at Warehouse
Last Modified: Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 3:51 p.m.
The Distracted Globe's "Battle of the Sexes Summer" continues with "Man of Destiny" by George Bernard Shaw and "The Bear" by Anton Chekhov.
"Man of Destiny" introduces us to a young French soldier, Napoleon Bonaparte. Fresh from a notable victory in Italy, he rests in a small inn to regroup and plan. But what he finds there is a clever woman who claims she holds information vital to Napoleon. What ensues is a game of cat and mouse between one of history's greatest generals and the hypothetical woman who makes him question everything... including what exactly is in her bodice?
Directed by the Globe's Jayce Tromsness, "Man of Destiny's" cast pits Brock Koonce as Napoleon against the Globe's Traysie Amick as the Lady, supported by the incomparable Ryan Bradburn and Rhydwyn Davies as the Lieutenant and Giuseppe.
"The Bear" takes one of Chekhov's favorite short comedies and drops it in the 1950s where we meet Popova - a woman in love with her husband (now that he's dead), but even more so, in love with the role of the widow. Enter Smirnov, the rough-around-the-edges bill collector, here to bully his way into the pieces of her husband's fortune. An hysterically melodramatic tete-a-tete, it's an overblown bodice-ripper, made all the more fun by a character who didn't know he was in one.
Directed by the Globe's Anne Kelly Tromsness, "The Bear" features the Globe's Jennifer Goff as Popova taking on Globe associate artist Andy Croston as Smirnov, as well as Rhydwyn Davies as the "ancient Bolshevik" Luka.
