We all know that change is the one constant in life, but when a company with a presence as strong and positive as GE announces a possible shift, Henderson County hearts skip a beat.
We are all aware of the situation thus far; the Times News has done a fine job of covering the information:
- GE may “spin off” its appliance, lighting, and industrial unit to shareholders to become a stand-alone company (this would include our local plant).
- At this point, there is some uncertainty about how changes might affect pay and benefits. - GE spokeswoman Kim Freeman has stated that GE will strive to maintain pay and offer comparable benefits.
But just remember, this is nothing new! Mergers happen all the time. Don’t forget, Continental Teves was once ITT, Rockwell became ArvinMeritor, and Kimberly Clark blossomed from Berkley Mills.
Whatever shifts are made, we can all rest assured that our local GE plant has leadership dedicated to its employees and the Henderson County community. Their track record proves it:
n Active and supporting member of the Chamber of Commerce since 1956. n $178,014 to the 2007 United Way Campaign (top giver). n Active and strong supporter of Junior Achievement.
The chamber, as well as a host of other community organizations, plan to stay on top of developments and will assist our GE partner in any way possible as details emerge. We will be diligently investigating opportunities associated with GE’s realignment as well as steps that can make our facility stronger and more secure.
GE has operated in Henderson County since 1955 and has always been one of the largest employers in the community. The company manufactures outdoor lighting fixtures used for lighting facilities ranging from parking lots to football stadiums. In fact – the 2008 Super Bowl was played under GE lighting fixtures made in Henderson County.
GE’s presence here has meant a lot to us all since 1955, so we hope you will stand with us as we remain optimistic and adjust our own sails!
Chris Burns is chairman of the board of directors of the Henderson County Chamber of Commerce.
