According to golf.com and an anonymous source, Tiger Woods, the world's No. 1-ranked player, has signed a deal to design a course located just east of Asheville for the Cliffs Communities.
Jamie Prince, a spokesperson for the Cliffs, declined comment, saying that no official announcement would be made before a press conference with Woods scheduled for Aug. 14.
An invitation to that event sent to the Times-News on Monday highlighted a new development called The Cliffs at High Carolina located off of Interstate 40 near exit 59.
The course would be Woods' inaugural golf course design in the United States.
Woods created a design company in November 2006 and shortly thereafter announced plans for a course named Al Ruwaya in Dubai, U.A.E. Woods was reportedly paid $25 million for his design. That course is scheduled for completion in 2009.
According to the report, Mark Steinberg, Woods's agent, did not immediately return a call for comment.
Woods would join several other prominent designers with ties to the Cliffs Communities. Jack Nicklaus designed the Walnut Cove and Keowee Falls courses, and Tom Fazio designed the Keowee Vineyards and Keowee Springs, slated to open in 2008, courses.
Gary Player will design the Mountain Park course near Travelers Rest, S.C., and move his family and corporate headquarters to the community.
