East teams dominate 2-A meet

GREENSBORO -- The teams from the East proved to be too much for the teams from the West for Friday's 2-A state championship track and field meet at North Carolina A&T University.

North Henderson's girls had the highest finish, placing ninth overall, and Brevard's boys ended up 10th. East Henderson's boys finished tied for 23rd, and West Henderson's boys ended up tied for 31st.

Four area athletes came up just short of winning individual state titles, finishing in runner-up spots -- Brevard's Frankie Waters in the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.61, East Henderson's Wesley Garren in the pole vault with a 14-6, North Henderson's Felisha Garren in the 400 with a 58.72 and West Henderson's Lindsey Pate in the discus with a toss of 119-10.

Latoya James won three individual events to lead Burlington Cummings to its second straight girls team title. Cummings tallied 73 points to 64 for runner-up Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons.

In the boys' meet, North Rowan captured its fourth state team title in the last five years and ninth track title in the last 14, holding off Cardinal Gibbons, 60-44.
